The TGA recommends regular screening every 2-3 years after the initial post-operative period. However, if you experience any symptoms such as changes in breast shape, pain, swelling, or hardness, you should schedule a screening immediately. For those with silicone implants, many surgeons recommend MRI screening beginning 5-6 years after surgery, then every 2-3 years thereafter.
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is considered the gold standard for detecting silent ruptures in silicone implants, with a detection rate of 90-95%. It provides detailed cross-sectional images of the implant and surrounding tissue. Ultrasound is excellent for detecting saline implant ruptures and assessing the tissue around implants, plus it's more accessible and cost-effective. Our comprehensive assessment combines both methods for the most thorough evaluation.
Both MRI and ultrasound screenings are completely non-invasive and painless. During an MRI, you'll lie comfortably on a padded table while the scanner captures imagesâthe process takes about 30-45 minutes. Ultrasound is even quicker, usually 15-20 minutes, and involves a technician gently moving a probe over your skin with warm gel. Our team prioritises your comfort throughout the entire process.
Yes, Medicare rebates are available for breast implant screening when you have a valid referral from your GP or specialist. The rebate amount varies depending on the type of imaging performed. We recommend obtaining a referral before your appointment to maximise your rebate. Our team can guide you through the process and provide estimates of out-of-pocket costs before your appointment.
If our specialist radiologists identify any concerns, you'll receive a comprehensive report explaining the findings in clear, understandable terms. We'll discuss the results with you personally and provide recommendations for next steps. If further action is needed, we'll connect you with our network of experienced plastic surgeons and breast specialists who can advise on the best course of treatment. You'll never be left without support or guidance.
We understand that waiting for results can be stressful, which is why we guarantee same-week results for all screenings. Most patients receive their comprehensive report within 2-3 business days. Urgent cases are prioritised, and if any significant concerns are identified, we'll contact you immediately. Your results will be sent to both you and your referring doctor.
While a referral is not mandatory for booking an appointment, we strongly recommend obtaining one from your GP or specialist. A referral entitles you to Medicare rebates, which can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket costs. Referrals are valid for 12 months, so you can request one in advance. If you don't have a referral, you can still bookâwe'll just invoice you for the full fee.
Preparation is minimal: wear comfortable clothing without metal components (you'll be provided with a gown), avoid wearing deodorant or lotions on the chest area, and bring your referral letter and any previous imaging results if available. For MRI scans, please inform us if you have any metal implants, pacemakers, or claustrophobia so we can make appropriate arrangements. Arrive 10 minutes early to complete paperwork.
